THE AD HOC HUD
==============
For novice users, configuration may be done through the included NS "Ad Hoc" HUD, which is a programmable switchboard for multifunctional devices with a large array of atomic settings. Simply click a button on the board to apply the indicated setting. The settings are as follows:
- 333: This is the channel that the board uses. Clicking this does nothing useful, but clicking and holding for a second can be used to change the channel that the HUD is sending commands on. If you have more than one LRE-3, you should use a custom channel number to prevent cross-talk. (See below)
- PAGE x: Switches to another page of the HUD.
PAGE 0
———
- bpm: Changes the rate at which the LRE-3 orbs oscillate. This is measured in beats per minute. For best results, use an external tool to determine the exact BPM of your songs and match them accordingly.
- multi: This is an effects speed multiplier that determines how fast the effects update. Higher values are appropriate for slow longs with gentle beats but high tempos. The default is multi 1. Only use multi .25 and .5 for high-speed breakdowns and climaxes.
Several additional settings are present at the bottom of page 0. These are shortcuts for clearing behaviors applied on other pages, as described below.
PAGE 1
———
- slosh: This determines how much the LRE-3 orbs rotate. A slosh of 0 keeps the lights pointed straight down, while a slosh of 2 will cause them to pan across the ceiling twice per beat.
- pulse: This causes the lights to strobe (oscillate in brightness rapidly.) The clock frequency of pulsing is tied to the fps interval (see page 2), not the bpm.
PAGE 2
———
- fov: This is the field of view of the first set of lights. A small fov shows only a tiny symbol on the ground, whereas an fov of 3.14 (the maximum) bathes the bottom half of the light's area of effect in projector glow.
- falt: This is the field of view of the second set of lights.
- color: Adds a color to the color cycle sequence.
- clear: Removes all colors from the color cycle sequence.
- fps: This is the rate at which the lights cycle through the colors in the color cycle sequence.
- split: Causes the second set of lights to always take on the inverse of the first set of lights (e.g. red when the lights should be cyan, black when they should be white)
PAGE 3
———
- gobo: This is the image used by the first set of projectors. New gobo images should be square, white-on-black mattes placed directly in the root prim of the lighting rig. THEY MUST BE SET TO FULL PERMISSIONS.
PAGE 4
———
- galt: This is the image used by the second set of projectors. New galt images are loaded just like gobo images.
PAGE 5 & 6

These pages are empty by default.
PROGRAMMING THE AD HOC HUD
—————————————
Click and hold a button for 250 ms (about half a beat) on a button, then release. A text box will appear asking you for the new message that the button should send.
To change the color of a button, use normal SL edit tools. Button colors will be preserved when switching pages.
(Reminder: Press Ctrl-3 to open the Edit tools and then Ctrl-Shift-E to enable Edit Linked mode, then click on the button and choose a new Color from the Texture tab. Mac keyboards call the 'Ctrl' key 'Command'.)
TIPS
——
When the lighting rig is no longer in use, set bpm to 0 on page 0 to prevent it from using sim resources.
=================================
SEQUENCING MORE ADVANCED COMMANDS
=================================
The Ad Hoc HUD is highly convenient for playing the LRE-3 rig like a musical instrument, but some DJs would prefer more meticulous configuration. Creating custom SL gestures is the simplest way to do this—simply make them send all the commands you want to execute on channel /333 (or whatever channel you're currently using; see next section). For example, a gesture might have:
Chat : /333 bpm 131
Chat : /333 multi 4
Chat : /333 clear
Chat : /333 color 1 0 0
To set the lighting to red only, the BPM to 131, and a sway speed multiplier of 4.0x.
====================
CHANGING THE CHANNEL
====================
The LRE-3 is designed around the use of a secret channel number for security. By changing the chat channel that the HUD and rig both use, you can prevent strangers from accessing your lighting rig, as well as keep multiple rigs from conflicting with each other.
To change the channel, click on the LRE-3 and type:
channel <number>
Where <number> is a number between -2147483648 and 2147483647. For example,
channel 1234
Afterward, long-press on the top-left Ad Hoc HUD button and enter the new number.
We strongly recommend not using channel 0, as this will contaminate local chat. Bigger numbers are generally better, and less likely to be guessed by the kinds of people who might want to grief your DJ. You might find it convenient to change the number at the end of each performance, just to discourage unauthorized use of your equipment.
Keep in mind that any gestures you have made per the instructions in the last section do need to be updated whenever you change the channel number.
