Hello and welcome to the generic light gauge!
To set up your gauge properly, you'll need some enthusiasm for contorting prims and a willingness to read somewhat cryptic config files.
The generic light gauge is a flexible information display that represents one of the unit's system status attributes as either prim slice, prim cut, or prim brightness. This means you can make indicators that glow brighter when the status attribute in question is high, or fill up, either horizontally (like a progress bar) or angularly (like a pie chart.)
First, wear the gauge. By default it attaches to the cheek; you'll probably want to change that by the time you're done reading this.
Edit the gauge and open the notecard _gauge-config. Note the following:
- By default, the gauge uses prim cut (angular display, mode 1). If we wanted to change this to use slice instead (for a linear progress bar), we could set the mode to 0, or get the bar to glow brighter when power is full, with mode 2.
- The gauge shows the unit's current power level (topic power, field 1). We could also make it display a different attribute, like the fan speed, by setting "topic fan" instead of "topic power". Relevant pages are:
- We don't want it using all 360° to display the information in prim cut mode, though, so the slice/cut start and end are set at 0.4 and 0.6 respectively, which takes up an area of about 72°.
- Since power is reported in the range 0.0 to 1.0, the gauge needs to know that. "min 0" and "max 1" accomplish this. "danger 0.2" means the bar will blink when the level is below 0.2; set this to 0 to disable it.
- Finally, the prims 1 and 2 should be use for the gauge's background and foreground, respectively. Setting the 'face' values for each to -1 means all of the materials on each prim will be recolored.
Now! Go ahead and reshape your prims to your heart's content. With mode 2, you can even use mesh!
NOTE ABOUT MODE 1: Because of the way SL sets prim properties, you may lose some settings if you make changes to the prims while the script is running. This only applies while using mode 1, so switch to mode 0 or 2 temporarily. The config file is reloaded on every save.
EXAMPLES OF USEFUL GAUGE TOPICS:
- topic rate, field 1: power usage (Joules; units normally use around 780-800 W (Companion) or 700W (ARES), calibrate max appropriately. Suggested default maximum: 1000W)
- topic fan, field 1: fan speed (0-1)
- topic wait-teleport, field 1: seconds until FTL capacitor recharged (calibrate max appropriately)
- topic temperature, field 1: temperature (degrees Celsius; calibrate min and max appropriately) - ATOS/ARES required
- topic weather, field 2: external temperature (degrees Celsius; calibrate min and max appropriately) - ATOS/ARES required
- topic integrity, field 1: hit points (0-1) - ATOS required
- topic arousal, field 1: arousal level (0-1) - TESI required
- topic arousal, field 3: sensitivity level (0-1) - TESI required
- topic lubricant, field 1: lubricant level (Liters; units normally hold 5 L, calibrate max appropriately) - TESI required
For code sanitation reasons, 'color' cannot be used as a topic.
The gauge listens on the unit's light bus channel, but does not single out any source, so feel free to create your own messages sent by other attachments.
