If you trust someone to interact with your ARES system on a regular basis, it is a good idea to give them permanent access as a registered user. A user has all the privileges of a guest, but is not removed when your guest list is cleared, and never expires. This also makes them a great tool for owners who want to be more involved in their unit's day-to-day interactions with others.

Users and guests are both managed under the access control... menu.
To turn a guest into a user: access control... > guests... > (name) > make user.
To add a new user by UUID: access control... > users... > add by UUID....

Levels of trust

As mentioned previously, there are actually three kinds of users: regular Users, Managers, and Owners. These categories are called ranks. Managers can access the settings menu and most of the access control... menu, but only Owners can access the access control... > rules menu. Regular Users can't access either menu, except to lower their rank or remove themselves.

Promotion and demotion

Making a User into a Manager or a Manager into an Owner is called promotion, and the reverse is called demotion.

Handing over the keys

ARES always expects to have at least one Owner. By default, this is is the unit itself. Thus, to transfer ownership to another User, you'll need to follow these three steps:
  1. Add the new owner as a User.
  2. Promote the new owner to the rank of Owner. (access control... > users... > (name) > make owner)
  3. Demote or remove the old Owner.

Total power exchange

If the unit was previously self-owned, removing it will make it a member of the public—which means it gets a consent prompt when it touches itself! To completely remove the unit from having access to itself, it needs to be banned. This is covered in the next tutorial.
