Conventional NS callsign format dictates that unit names should consist of a single lower-case word punctuated by a single numerical digit, replacing a letter that looks similar:

numberreplacesexample
0ovi0let
1iatt1
2za2ure
3eekh3ssa
4acl4ire
5sely5ia
6beliza6eth
7tas7rid
8
9gan9ela

The placement of this digit ideally depends on optimizing the apparent shape of the word to have an appealing, balanced form. For example, while "Kokoro" contains three Os, it is preferred to replace the first O, giving k0koro. Some names may be impossible to coerce into an aesthetically pleasing format, e.g. if they do not contain any of the letters listed above. In such an event, we recommend simply choosing a different name with more vowels in it.

In general, vowels are preferred over consonants for numeric replacement, and positions at the start or end of the name should be avoided if possible to prevent misreading; some people will interpret "eric4" as "Eric #4" rather than the intended "Erica."
